Casa Lumbre has launched Contraluz, the first-ever premium and artisanal cristalino mezcal. The Mexican spirits company also produces Montelobos, Ancho Reyes, Ojo De Tigre, Abasolo, and Nixta.

Made from cultivated Espadín agave, Contraluz Cristalino is distilled in copper pot stills and then aged for approximately six months in charred American oak barrels “sourced from renowned whiskey producers,” according to the brand. From there, the mezcal goes through a special “small-batch” filtration process developed by chief innovation officer Ivan Saldaña, where the liquid filters through activated charcoal before bottling.

“Contraluz Cristalino Mezcal joins a robust portfolio of award-winning mezcals that have led and contributed to the evolution and growth of the agave spirits category,” said Saldaña. “As the first cristalino mezcal, we’re proud to introduce a new and different way of experiencing agave-based distillates.”

The mezcal offers flavors of green agave, citrus, and light smoke complemented by further notes of vanilla, cedar, honey, and dried fruit. The finish is described as sweet and long-lasting, balanced by the taste of cooked agave, clove and cacao. The brand recommends enjoying the liquid neat or in a cocktail.

“Contraluz exemplifies the standard we so proudly set out for ourselves since day one,” commented Casa Lumbre CEO and co-founder Moises Guindi. “This addition to our portfolio is deeply grounded in the cultural authenticity and artisanship that is emblematic of our company, and embodies our spirit of innovation.”

With an elevated look and feel, the packaging is designed to represent Contraluz Cristalino Mezcal’s luxury positioning in the category of agave-based distillates. The textured bottle pays homage to mezcal’s raw material – the agave heart – and acts as a prism that celebrates and spotlights the crystal, clear liquid.

Contraluz Cristalino Mezcal is currently available in Mexico and select US states, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Illinois, where it is priced at $59.99. Expansion across the US and internationally is expected to continue into 2023.
